To be filed under A Kitchen Appliance We Didn’t Even Know We Wanted: the wood-burning cooker. Made for domestic kitchens, the cookers serve the dual purpose of heating your kitchen and allowing for wood-fired cooking.

Here are our favorite finds:

Above: The Esse Ironheart, a steel and cast iron wood cookstove from England, “may look like it’s been around forever,” as the company says, “but in fact it’s a recent arrival, created to celebrate 150 years of Esse. It’s a stove and a range cooker in one, combining our two main product ranges—cooking and heating have never come together more beautifully.” In the US the cookstove is available from Obadiah’s Woodstoves; prices start at approximately $6,000 (various add-ons are available). In the UK go to Esse for more information. (Another English brand to investigate is Thornhill, which makes a wood-burning enameled cooker that resembles an Aga.)

Above: The Neos 901 from Italian company J. Corradi has an industrial appeal. Wood-burning cooker with firebox, wood-burning oven, cast iron cooking grate. According to the company, “The Neos is available in either a stainless steel or black painted metal finish and is designed to make the most of the ‘continuous fire’ technique, which allows hot embers to burn for up to six hours after the appliance was last loaded.”
