“As Long as There’s Continuity, You Can Go Wild”: Combining Wallpaper, Fabric, and Rugs with Vanderhurd

May 24, 2024

Ahoy, all you color- and pattern-averse people! Come take a look at the latest from Vanderhurd, designer Christine Van Der Hurd’s London-based rug and textile company which specializes in combining kindred colors and prints.

Opticality, Vanderhurd’s new block-printed linen designs, are available in the UK—the Vanderhurd shop is on Portobello Road—and at Studio Four NYC in Manhattan. Christine presents her latest collection in a series of pattern-on-pattern room settings that manage to feel composed, calm, and exciting.

“As long as there’s continuity—a nuance of color that runs through each fabric or rug—you can go wild,” she advises. “Start with something you adore, such as an antique textile, a bespoke carpet, or an interesting print or weave—and then build your scheme around it.” Here’s how she puts her Opticality designs to work.

The rug is Vanderhurd’s Sands of Time Plain with Border, a hand-woven dhurrie of handspun hemp. The chair and table are from Remodelista favorite Howe of London.

Above: Christine Van Der Hurd began her career post-art school by designing textiles for Liberty’s, Etro, and Yves Saint Laurent, among others. In the 1980s she lived in NYC and with a partner ran the furniture gallery Modernage. Along the way, she started receiving rug commissions—Christine’s the one who supplied all of the carpets for Henri Bendel on Fifth Avenue—which led to the founding of Vanderhurd. Christine added textiles and wallpaper to the collection in recent years.

Studio Four founder, Stacy Waggoner, and Christine met in the late 1980s when Stacy worked for Jack Lenor Larsen—Modernage was right downstairs. “I’ve been following Christine’s career as a friend and fan ever since,” Stacy tells us. Studio Four is one of a small number of design studios that carry Vanderhurd’s rugs, fabric, and wallpaper.
