If you haven’t heard of Graduate Hotels, you will soon—especially if you live near a college town, have a college-age kid, or plan on attending a college reunion anytime soon. The hospitality chain—so far, 13-strong and growing—has plans to expand its empire of design-focused, campus-based hotels to 12 more locations by 2020, including a foray into the Ivy League this year with openings in Providence and New Haven. Its goal is to have a total of 100 properties in its portfolio in the next 10 years.
One of its newest launches, the Graduate Seattle, caught our eye with its bold palette and playful take on Art Deco. Here are some of our favorite design moments from the new hotel, which opened this past November in the city’s University District.

Above: The building’s Art Deco roots are immediately apparent when you walk into the lobby of the Graduate Seattle and are greeted by a rich, deep color palette. The use of purple, specifically, throughout the hotel is a nod to the University of Washington’s school colors. Above: A soaring ceiling in the lobby creates a dramatic space, complete with a two-story wall installation of vintage amps and speakers, a reference to Seattle’s indie rock history. Above: A riot of patterns that somehow works in this quieter moment in the lobby. Above: Guest rooms feature scalloped wood headboards and artwork that pays tribute to the some of the university’s famous alumni, including Bruce Lee. Other alums honored include rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot and astronaut Michael P. Anderson. Above: A fringed lounge chair, one of our favorite new trends.
