Even we can admit it: Ovens are not the most exciting topic. But
smart ovens? Now this workhorse household appliance sounds glamorous and intriguing: “Let me preheat my smart oven while you park the Tesla” has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?
All kidding aside, the market seems to be exploding with cooking gadgets that take the guesswork out of roasting, let you control the temperature from your phone, and even claim to replace all your countertop appliances.
Here are a few we’ve seen:
Above: The June Oven ($599) is seven appliances in one: A convection oven, air fryer, dehydrator, slow cooker, broiler, toaster, and warming drawer. There’s even a camera inside that detects what you’re cooking, as well as lets you watch your meal cook from your phone—which is how a friend of mine was alerted that her boyfriend was using theirs to cook a frozen lasagna with the plastic wrap still on. Above: Breville’s Smart Oven has nine cooking functions; $259.95. Above: We learned about the Master Chef 5 Ovens in 1 from our sister site, The Organized Home, when a designer used it in her kitchenette remodel. Similar to the popcorn button on a microwave, the oven has presets for common meals that automatically set the energy, temperature, and cooking time; $399. Above: Whirlpool offshoot WLabs’ Smart Oven has 11 cooking modes, a built-in sensor that automatically sets the oven temperature based on what you place inside, a smart thermometer, and more; it’s $799 and available for preorder now. Above: The founders behind Brava wanted to make cooking and meal time more efficient and enjoyable, which led them to create a light-based heat source that cooks food faster than traditional ovens. The accompanying app has recipes that can be loaded into the Brava, which then self-adjusts for time and temperature; $795. Above: The Tovala Steam Oven has a barcode scanner, which allows you to scan items you bought at the grocery store, or meal kits purchased through Tovala and let the oven do the heating, timing, and cooking. The oven is $349, and includes the option for an accompanying meal kit subscription.
