We are completely enamored of the Henrybuilt kitchen system. The company originated in Seattle, opened a Manhattan showroom not long ago, and is coming to LA soon; expect expert engineering, beautiful materials (rift-cut oak, walnut), streamlined silhouettes. Equally at home in a period building or a modern loft, it's our dream kitchen system. Not planning to expand your culinary empire at the moment? I installed a henrybuilt kitchen a year ago and it's fantastic. First I looked at big Eurpoean companies (mistakenly thinking American offerings were limited to country cupboards from Home Depot) but had misgivings over how severe they appeared, as if they were beamed from a future society where no one actually cooks. Bulthaup, Boffi, Valcucine, all gorgeous but competely intimidating. I wanted something honest, like cooking itself, and something that would age gracefully. I stumbled aross the henrybuilt showroom in New York and was immediately sold--they "got it." The inhouse designers solved the puzzle of my small kitchen layout beautifully, and offered great advice on fixtures, tiles and lights that work with the hb look. There were a few production glitches that were promptly resolved, and everyone involved, from the mailroom to the woodshop, was very accessible. Can't recommend them enough. Well, maybe I just did.
