10 Easy Pieces: Simple White Sheet Sets

From Julie

From Julie, Janet, Sarah & Francesca:

We've rounded up our personal favorites in the bed linens department, from budget sheets to high end (prices are for queen-size sheet sets). For excellent guidance on sifting through bedding options, consult Shopping with Julian Tomchin in the New York Times. Tomchin is a veteran of the linens business, and has this to say: “Once you get beyond 400 threads per square inch, be suspicious. The standard for counting is to add each warp (vertical) and filling (horizontal) thread per square inch. The most that normally fits is 400, after which the threads are thinner and weaker. Some companies use two- or three-ply threads and multiply the count."

Above: Sarah's favorite sheets are Coyuchi's organic percale 100 percent cotton sheets, available in white or ivory; the Coyuchi Queen Flat is $70 and the Fitted Queen is $66.

Above: Julie's favorite reasonably priced sheets are from The Company Store; the crisp, no-nonsense 280-Thread Count Solid Bedding sheets. A Queen Flat Sheet is $28.99 and a Queen Fitted Sheet is $28.99.

Above: The four of us covet the Matteo Stitch 300-thread-count cotton bed linens; the Matteo Stitch Flat Sheet is $95 and the Matteo Stitch Fitted Sheet is $95 at Bobby Berk Home.

White Company Sheets

Above: Janet's all-time favorite basics come from the White Company in London, which offers high quality at a great price. The 200-thread-count, Egyptian cotton percale sheets are made in Italy; the Queen (called Double in England) Fitted and Flat Sheets are £24 each.

Above: Signature Hemstitched Percale Sheets from Garnet Hill; Domino magazine called this sheet "a cut above the other moderately priced cottons—with a crisp, classic finish right out of the dryer." The Queen Signature Fitted Sheet is $50 and the Queen Signature Flat Sheet is $55.

PB organic cottton sheet set

Above: Francesca relies on Pottery Barn for basic bedding: PB Organic 400-Thread-Count Supima Sheet Set; $189 for the queen set (includes a pair of pillowcases).

sferra grand hotel sheets

Above: We aspire to someday own Sferra's Grande Hotel Sheets (the no. 1 choice of hotels all over the world) made of 100 percent Italian Egyptian cotton percale; $241 for the queen set.

Organic Frayed Edge Sheets

Above:  Organic Undyed Cotton Frayed-Edge Sheets from West Elm; $99 for the queen set; Julian Tomchin owns these.tYour order requires more information.

I have been looking for the classic crisp cotton sheet. I am not a fan of the softer egyptian cotten, or sateen sheets. Still looking!!

I love the Company Store basic cotton sheets. They get softer and softer with each wash, but somehow still maintain just the right amount of crispness. Love 'em!

I'm a huge fan of Restoration Hardware's 464 Percale sheets. They have a nice weight and are crisp and cool on a hot summer night. Ours have worn well.

No linen sheets? They're my favorite - admittedly expensive, best quality are italian and not as easy to find as cotton. To the poster looking for a classic, crisp sheet try "Resin Free Sheets"
from Vermont Country Store. They stay cool and feel really good on the face as you bury your head in the pillow.....
