Palette & Paints: Black Magic
September 2nd, 2007
From Julie:
The Rolling Stones sang, “I see a red door and I want it painted it black.” I agree. Every room benefits from a touch of black. Here are some ways to bring more black into your life:
An Op Art wall hanging:

Below: Over-sized Caravaggio lamps from Cecilie Manz, Denmark’s latest design whiz; available from Design Within Reach.

Below: A classic clawfoot tub painted black, as in this British bathroom.

Below: Tom Dixon’s Beat lights; a series of hand-beaten brass pendant lights with black patinated exterior; available at Nova.

Below: A black retro TV in a living room from Living Etc.

Below: Interior designer Tom Scheerer crosses over to the dark side in this room.

Black is the best, isn’t it? I’m happy to say that I’m able to convince a client into a very black wall. Hence I’m using a striking geometric wall paper with a huge contemporary Fluer de Le pattern. When it’s complete, I’ll have to share.
As far as the last photo of the all black walls, seems a bit dismal to me. It’s truly moody and I’d have to see the whole room but from this photo I’d need to have a skylight. I think there would be no way of getting away from the gloom. In small spaces, it usually is very dreary. Only lighting can help that so my choice would be to put it in a water closet with some unsually fantastic chandelier or sconces.
If I had a large room, I just might go crazy with black!
