The Insta-Famous Airbnb: Villa Arunja in Bali

February 5, 2019

The allure of a vacation rental over a hotel? The sense that you can try on a new life: for a few days, you can be someone who lives in a tiny walkup in New York, or in a rambling Italian villa. Book a stay at Villa Arunja in Bali, though, and you can try on the life of an Instagram-famous couple in one of the country’s trendiest villages.

Designer Lena Catterick, who has gained a cult following for Yoli & Otis, her line of plant-dyed baby carriers; her partner Carlo Letica, and their two small children split their time between Byron Bay and the Canggu area of Bali, a hippie enclave currently in the middle of a rebirth. When they’re in Australia, they rent out their place in Canggu—a whitewashed aerie with gauze curtains, woven mats, and a plunge pool—on Airbnb. We first spotted it on Instagram a few months ago; since then, it’s gained a following, with a feature in Conde Nast Traveler asking: “Is this Bali’s smartest Airbnb?”

The couple whitewashed the interiors and added woven mats throughout for a laid-back but cohesive (and kid-friendly) feel. The low teak daybeds were custom-built by a friend.
