To me, the ideal summer bedroom is all about simplicity: windows open, crisp sheets, and a light for those of us (me) who want to stay up and read into the night.
I’ve been wanting to make a few small tweaks to make my own bedroom cool and serene for the balance of the summer. Here’s one thing I have and five things I’m eyeing for a midsummer refresh.
Currently Have
Above: Many of us on the Remodelista team have—and love—Alvar Aalto-inspired plywood stacking stools for use all over the house. I employ mine in my bedroom, where they make ideal nightstands: visually lightweight and unobtrusive in a narrow spot. Ikea no longer makes its version, sadly, but the Gymax Stacking Stools are very similar; $77.27 for a set of four from Bed Bath and Beyond.
Eyeing
Above: I’ve been looking for an heirloom-quality quilt to drape over the bed—the perfect weight to pull up on chilly Maine nights (or to kick off when it’s too hot). The handmade cotton Lattice Patchwork Quilt in Aegean blue is a keepsake; $625 from Toast. Above: In summer, I am serious about cotton sheets, the crisper the better. I love this Mellow Green Stripe (actual name) from Piglet in Bed; a pair of Cotton Pillowcases are $79, and the Fitted Sheet and Flat Sheet are each $99. Above: For reading late late late into the night while my husband sleeps and moths land on the glass: a pair of Original 1227 Mini Ceramic Wall Lights, $180 each from Lumens. Above: I love a short, menswear-ish PJ set. (Sometimes, to quote Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, just the top half.) For an affordable option, I’m eyeing the 100 Percent European Linen Shorts Pajama Set (particularly in this summery cornflower color), $62 from Quince. Above: For a clutch of flowers on the bedside table—ideally Queen Anne’s lace: La Soufflerie’s Cappelli Vase, $40 from Mohawk General Store.
