When I lived in a New York City studio apartment, I had dreams of transforming my tiny balcony into an urban oasis teeming with healthy plants. Unfortunately, after a few false starts, my container garden dream turned into a container garden nightmare. I was finally asked by my landlord to remove the plant cemetery that had slowly accumulated on my balcony. Ouch.
Sometimes, gardening is best left to the professionals. That’s where Plant Package comes in. Each month they pack up and ship an assortment of ready-to-grow plants right to your door, complete with everything you need to help them thrive. All you do is add water, assemble, and bask in the sunshine alongside your happy new container garden. They also offer flexible delivery options so you can order as frequently as you’d like or get a monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly subscription to decorate with new container gardens year-round. It’s a pretty foolproof way to get growing, no matter how green your thumb may (or may not) be. Here’s how it all works:
Unbox
Your plants arrive neatly packed in a box with everything you need, including potting soil, plant food, a container, and even a gardening accessory like gloves or a spade if you elect for their premium box. I may not have a green thumb, but I do try to be “green” so I was a little worried about all the packaging this might entail. With the exception of a big plastic bag to mix your soil in (more on that below), all the packaging is either recyclable or biodegradable. Instead of bubble wrap, all the plants are secured with paper and even their pots are biodegradable so you don’t have to remove them when planting. That’s a big mess-saver if you’re assembling your garden indoors.
Hydrate
Instead of shipping actual soil, which wouldn’t be very green, Plant Package ships all their boxes with lightweight discs of eco-friendly coconut coir. You place those in the supplied plastic bag, add the plant food, and simply hydrate with warm water. Suddenly you have a full bag of fresh potting soil and you’re ready to go. Keep in mind that even if your Plant Package arrives on a day before you’re ready to assemble, you can just give the plants water and sunshine in their existing pots and save the project for the weekend.
Assemble
Now, the fun part. Your package arrives with four plants that are hand selected to do well indoors or out. July’s theme is Summer Campfire and features a selection of bright Proven Winner® flowers, which are especially hearty plants for beginner gardeners and do well in the summer heat. Each month has a new theme, with seasonal plant arrangements that tie in to the season or holidays. Even in the dark days of winter, the gardeners at Plant Package choose plants that will do well with less light and in indoor climates.
Your package also comes with instructions on how to arrange your plants in your container and what soil level to use. You can be a little creative here depending on your space, but all Plant Packages are designed to fit perfectly in the provided container so you don’t have to worry too much about giving each plant too much or too little space.
Enjoy
Once you’ve arranged your plants in their container, you’re all set. The only challenge here is to find the right place to display your new little garden. The instructions will include recommendations on full, partial, or no sun to keep your plants at their happiest, as well as watering instructions. The plants are chosen to grow together so as long as you follow the same watering instructions for every container you plant, you’re good to grow.
