Frontier Style Cooking

August 1, 2012

For a few days each June, my family takes up residence in a tented cabin at Yosemite's Tuolumne Meadows. In a throwback to simpler times, the canvas tented cabins are heated by small wood-burning stoves, which invariably makes me dream about bringing one back to my own cabin, tent, or backyard gathering.

Designed for outdoor campsite cooking, the Frontier Camping Stove also heats small cabins and tents. Classically styled, it packs down neatly after use and can be easily carried by hand. For now it's only available in the UK; anyone out there have any ideas for similar US-made camp stoves?

Above: The all-steel construction of the Frontier Stove features three folding legs which are secured by pins; £149.99 at Green Shopping in the UK.

Above: The stove is wood-burning.

Above: The Frontier can be used in large tents, teepees, or sheds with the addition of a Frontier Stove Flashing Kit, available for £36.

Above: The Frontier Stove is quick to assemble or disassemble. The flue pipe and the ash catcher fit inside the body of the stove, making it compact and easy to carry. It weighs only 24 pounds.

Above: An alternative to the beach bonfire. See our collection of Grills and Firepits for more outdoor hand-warming and cooking alternatives.
