My most recent obsession? Fanciful cakes by Victoria Nam of Siblings Bakery here in Maine. But for when (or if) you tire of eating patisseries and sweets, the next best thing may be candles that look convincingly like fruits, cakes, and other confections. Trimmed in (wax) frosting, tipped with faux cherries, or moulded into loaves of bread, here are 18 entrancing food candles for the holiday table.
Above: A wax rendering of the traditional French dessert, the Croquembouche Candle is made by sixth-generation Italian candle co. Cereria Introna, in the business of realistic food candles, made from paraffin wax and 100 percent cotton wicks, since 1840. The candle is $39 from Flotsam and Fork. Above: Croissant Candles (“with bakery scent”) are handmade from natural, vegan wax; $13.90 each from ItsMyCandlesBoutique on Etsy.
Above: John Derian carries a collection of candles made from Italian candle makers Cereria Introna. We like the Large Panettone Candle (left; $56) and the Biscotto Nordivo Candied Nordic Heart Cake Candle (right; $30). Note: Just as with real panettone, remove the paper wrapper before use.
Above: The Charlotte Russe Dessert Candle is “a classic European recipe from the eighteenth century. The cake has layers of ladyfingers, Bavarian cream, and fruit” (all in wax, of course). It’s $78 from Anaïs Candle. Above: A set of Pasticceria Candles by Italian co. Cereria Introna is $98 from Gohar World and includes “sfogliatella, cannoli, and cassatina, an all-Italian classic spread that is sure to impress any crowd.”
Above: Who knew soft cheeses would make such a lovely candles? The Ricotta Candle (left) is $34 from Gohar World, and the Soft Cheese Candle (right) is $20 from John Derian.
Above: This Birthday Cake Candle makes a nostalgic addition to the table, and—bonus—it’s unscented. It’s $28 from Dormify. Above: Sicilian Lemon Candles look just like the real thing and are a bright alternative to patisserie. They start at $7.38 each and comes in a wide array of citrus scents (like clementine, lemon and lavender, lime and mandarin) or unscented. Above: From Portuguese shop Luisa Paixão, the pomegranate-shaped Romã Decorative Candle is “made in Portugal, near Fátima, by a small workshop” using natural materials. Each candle is $16.09 from Luisa Paixão.
Above: The Rainbow Cookie Candle is $85 from New York-based artist and curator Janie Korn. Above: “The Baguette Candle will add a touch of surreal humor to your tabletop,” according to retailer Gohar World. It’s also made by Cereria Introna; $38. Above: And for something a bit different? These Egg Candles are made from natural soy wax; $10 for a set of two via Etsy. Above: We love Cereria Introna’s Persimmon Candle; $24 from East Fork (though currently sold out).
Above: This Braided Bread Candle is unscented (and gluten-free, the shop adds). It’s $49.99 from Friends NYC. Above: “Nerikiri namagashi, or traditional fresh sweets usually made of red bean paste, are a big part of the tea ceremony,” according to retailer Japan Trend Shop. The Kameyama Nerikiri Wagashi Sweets Candles, a box of twelve wax replicas, is $62 from Japan Trend Shop. Above: Fitting for the season (or perhaps as a wedding or engagement gift): The Small Antica Cereria Champagne Candle is $65 from John Derian.
