We’re always interested to see what our party planner extraordinaire friend David Stark is up to—especially around the holidays. This Halloween, he and his team came up with a DIY tablescape featuring dried gourds spray painted black. “Our goal was to create an elegant yet appropriately moody black-on-black tablescape using dried gourds—their curvy necks create spooky ghostlike forms. The table is set with black plates, flatware, and glassware, in a mix of glossy and matte; the varying scale of the place settings creates visual and tactile interest.” Here’s a how-to:

Above: “We coated the dried gourds with spray paint,” David says, “but they could be painted by hand with a brush. Dried gourds are for sale all over the place this time of year, but we got ours from Amish Gourds.” Above: Simple craft paper stands keep the gourds from rolling around on the table. Above: Cut strips of black card stock paper; form the strips into loops and secure in place with double stick tape.
