January seems like a good month to replenish our stores of warm blankets and throws. Currently on the wish list: Begg & Co.’s sumptuous throws.
Begg & Co. has been in the weaving business for more than 150 years. The Scottish company started out in the town of Paisley, where it became famous for its paisley-patterned shawls. Around the turn of the 20th century, Begg & Co. moved to the southwest coast of Scotland, to Ayr, where it remains today, producing shawls, blankets, pillows, and more, all woven from natural materials like cashmere, angora, and lambswool.
The mill still relies on age-old weaving techniques. From its website: “Cloth is still pummeled for a softer handfeel using the same wooden device created by Begg employees around 70 years ago, and the characteristic ripple effect seen on some items occurs after gentle brushing with specially cultivated Italian teasel plant heads, which are dampened with mineral-rich Scottish water.”
