A pedestal or tower fan occupies a useful middle ground: substantial enough to cool an entire room, but without asking you to rewire the ceiling or dedicate a surface to a table fan that never quite reaches beyond the person sitting in front of it. Portable, directional, and increasingly well designed, it’s one of those seasonal objects that’s worth choosing with as much care as any piece of furniture.
