Architect Visit: Alex Scott Porter in Amagansett

From Julie

There's a lot to like about this barn-like house in Amagansett designed by New York architect Alex Scott Porter, starting with the salvaged timber used throughout the project and the seamless indoor/outdoor feel. After graduating from Columbia's School of Architecture, Porter worked at the New Jersey Barn Company, disassembling antique timber-frame barns and designing reassembled structures; later she worked for the Polshek Partnership and for Francois de Menil. She commissioned pieces from Jim Zivic Design for the project, including the leather link hammock, and a glass bubble chandelier from Lindsey Adelman.

You write, "...starting with the fact that she used characterful salvaged timber throughout the project and created a seamless indoor/outdoor feel."

Right. And that is truly just a 'start'. This was a magnificent set of photos, indoors and out. From what I can see, there is architectural clarity about movement, material, light, nature, relaxation and restoration - all the qualities one could hope for in summer -- or any other time of year.
What a place. Bravo!

An incredible house! I wish I had the bank to hire Alex Porter.

Congratulations! I couldn't think of any other design that would be more open yet comfortable to live in.

This is my dream house. Both rustic and elegant, it incorporates the softness of the natural landscape and offers humans a peaceful sanctuary from the noisy chaos of everyday urban life. Thanks for thinking BIG!

It's hard to imagine I'm related to someone with such extraordinary talent! I second the comment above -- wish I could hire you!

What a beautiful home. With this much artistic integrity and graceful use of space it must be an "Alex Porter"!

The shelter magazines are going to be cat fighting over who gets to feature this one. Can't wait to see more of Alex Porter's work.

I have the privilege to say from a client stand point that working with Alex is just as much of a joy as the finished products she creates.

The seamless indoor/outdoor feel Alex has designed would work well as a villa for yoga retreats. Particularly if it were located in Negril, Jamaica, W.I. Outstanding work Ms. Porter
