Architect Visit: Wheeler Kearns in Chicago

From Julie

Wheeler Kearns in Chicago recently completed a dramatic overhaul of an 1870s Victorian house located in a landmark district of the city. Although exterior changes were restricted by landmark guidelines, the interior underwent a complete gut renovation. The architects brought light and air into the newly opened space, creating a central, two-story volume containing the kitchen and baths, lit by a series of skylights. Large French doors at the south-facing rear extend the living space into the garden and provide natural light and views deep within the house. Photography by Monica Rosello.

Above: The landing extends to become the kitchen counter.

nice reno. interiors could use just a pop of color. but i'd still love to move in.

The landing extending to become the kitchen counter seems misguided. Why would you want to walk on the same surface where you prepared food?

I would immediately move into this hous. The smooth lines and brightness convince me.

LOOOOVE This project, it just goes to show you can take just about any structure and make it modern, clean and minimal inside.

I love the color of the exterior front door! Can anyone tell me what color that is?

The Eames molded plastic rocker shows black on the outside and white on the inside; was this painted? There doesn't seem to be an option to have it this way when ordering for Herman Miller.

I think the pendant light in bedroom is Lightyears Caravaggio Opal Pendant Light. You can find it from utility design's web page (co.uk).
