Remodelista Gift Guide 2020: Comfort Presents for Keeping Calm and Staying In

December 18, 2020

Come December just about every year, I covet all things that add softness and warmth—sheepskins, mohair blankets, thick-soled slippers, candles—as I batten down the hatches for the long winter ahead. But this year in particular, a simple amenity or two will be a welcome gift to just about anyone on your list—for weathering the winter months in warmth.

We’ve rounded up our favorite comfort objects, so to speak, that we’re giving this year (or buying for ourselves).

we love two dawson&#8\2\17;s duvets for crawling back under the covers, lon 17
Above: We love Two Dawson’s duvets for crawling back under the covers, long winter’s naps—and working from bed. Margot particularly likes their Linen Duvet with Pink Piping for a little extra cheer.

Above: Margot also let us know about Calm from The School of Life (“an organization built to help us find calm, self-understanding, resilience and connection”), a soothing gift for all this year.
tekla polin sleepware
Above: From Alexa: “I treated myself to a pair of Poplin Sleepwear from Copenhagen-based company Tekla (prices start at $100; tops and bottoms sold separately). I rationalized the purchase by telling myself that pajamas are the new clothes.”

Above: The nightgown/dress hybrid had a moment this year (see The New Yorker‘s The Allure of the Nap Dress), and we fully intend on keeping it going through the winter. Here are two we love: the Day Dress (left) from Brooklyn-based shop Salter House, handmade by a small group of women in New York City and shown here in Liberty print cotton ($280 and available for pre-order) and a Nightshirt from Domi (right), shown here in roses, a delicate white print on a deep blue background ($190).

&#8\2\20;we&#8\2\17;ve been using our evangeline linen throws nonstop,& 22
Above: “We’ve been using our Evangeline Linen throws nonstop,” reports Julie. We’re fans of all the Maine-based company’s offerings, though this Mohair Throw (shown here in rosé, $297) would make for a particularly soft addition for a winter indoors.

Above: “For the tea drinkers in the bunch: How’s this for an upgrade?” says Fan. It’s the Real Leaf Strainer from Qi Fine Teas, intricately made from a real mulberry leaf and, at only $3.99, a lovely option for a stocking stuffer.

Above: Since we don’t have a fireplace to gather ’round, I have been eyeing a Double-Arm Iron Candle Stand ($32.35) from June Home Supply for the mantel in our new apartment—equally striking when it’s not lit.

Above: “I like the idea from J. Hannah of her line of Pivot Rings, based on the idea of fidget spinners for anxiety,” says Alexa. Prices start at $395.

Above: The name might not inspire relaxation, but a cup of tea in one certainly would: “Trigger Mugs in matte white, in production for decades at Bennington Pottery,” says Margot. “I recently added to a set from my childhood.” They start at $18 each and come in a wide array of colors.
justine discovered textile maker harriett grist&#8\2\16;s hot water bottle 27
Above: Justine discovered textile maker Harriett Grist‘s hot water bottle covers, knitted in Hampshire from UK-sourced lambswool and paired with natural rubber bottles. The designs are in high demand (and Harriett’s Etsy shop has closed for the holiday), but a few of her selections are still available via UK shops like Monday, where the black and white Gordon, candy-striped Abbotts, and striped Peter are all £32.

Above: Another soft hot water bottle option: I’m ordering a few minimal designs from Hetti Berlin, each hand-sewn in Germany. (This one is the Sophia, €31.90.)
i also love the idea of these candles by uk based botanical candle co.: one for 29
Above: I also love the idea of these candles by UK-based Botanical Candle Co.: one for lighting early in the morning—First Light, shown here, with notes of eucalyptus and myrtle, another for lighting “just as the sun is low in the sky, for a gentle transition into the evening” (Half Light), and a third for “when the night sets in” (Last Light)—a candle ritual to keep going all day long. They start at £10 each.
eva solo bird feeder
Above: “On my wish list: a pretty bird feeder for observing avian visitors from the kitchen window,” Fan says. She especially likes the Glass Bird Feeders from Danish brand Eva Solo, $59 for a set of two from Didrik’s.
&#8\2\20;a friend of mine clued me in to the best cashmere watchcap ever. i 31
Above: “A friend of mine clued me in to the best cashmere watchcap ever. I even wear it indoors,” says Julie. It’s the Golightly Cashmere Watchcap, hand-knit in the US and available in 17 colorways ($165).
domi&#8\2\17;s sleep fragrance spray (\$\108) is meant to be worn when 32
Above: Domi’s Sleep Fragrance Spray ($108) is meant to be worn when putting on your pjs—not getting dressed up—a 2020 concept if we ever heard one. The fragrance is “a simple, soothing blend of lavender, sandalwood, chamomile, and other calming oils, 100 percent natural and organic whenever possible. And designed to be used before bed; a bedtime scent worn just for you.”
last but not least, julie and fan both swear by felted glerups: &#8\2\20;i& 33
Above: Last but not least, Julie and Fan both swear by felted Glerups: “I’ve always loved my slippers, but this year I’ve been quite literally living in them, and they are as cozy as ever,” reports Fan. This pair is the Boot with Leather Sole in gray ($125).
