Georgia, US, Meets Japan: Japanese-Inspired Tableware, Handmade in the South

Recently we’ve been admiring handmade, Japanese-style tableware made in an unexpected place: North High Shoals, Georgia. The small collection is a collaboration between husband and wife team Lori and Eric Wright who, they say, married their “love of the rustic, rural South with regard for the intrigue of the Japanese aesthetic.” ME Speak Design is the product of Lori’s Japanese-Hawaiian heritage and Eric’s background in furniture making, carpentry, and blacksmithing. Here’s a look at what’s currently on offer:

Above: Inspired by a traditional rice paddle, the Shamoji Rice Paddle is hand-carved, then burned for a charred finish, and can be used for any kind of cooking or serving. Of note: a small inset brass detail in the handle. It’s $65.
