We’re fans of the utilitarian kitchen (think deVol and Plain English), old-fashioned cabinet latches included. In the days before magnet closures, latches—both spring-loaded knobs and shutter bars—were designed to keep cabinet doors closed. Today they’re still utilized for their sturdiness, but also for their retro appeal. Here are our favorites.
Above: British Standard Cabinet Latches in the British Standard Ideal Kitchen. You can buy the latches à la carte from British Standard in brass, chrome, or tourmaline for £49 to £69. Above: The Nanz No. 8831 Cupboard Latch is the larger of the two latches available (the smaller latch is the No. 8832) from Nanz. It’s available in all Nanz plated and patinated finishes. Contact Nanz directly for pricing and more information. Above: Rejuvenation’s Small Oval Cupboard Latch comes in six different finishes (shown in oil-rubbed bronze) for $25 each. For larger cabinets, they also make the Large Oval Cupboard Latch for $29 each. Above: The Rocky Mountain Hardware Cabinet Latch CL100 is available in 10 different finishes (shown in Silicon Bronze Light). Contact Rocky Mountain Hardware for pricing and more information. Above: The Jeffrey Alexander Cabinet Latch is made of zinc and finished with polished nickel; $11.39 at My Knobs. Above: New to Rowen & Wren in the UK, the Grove Cabinet Latch in blackened bronze, brass, and matte nickel is £16. Above: For a cast iron cabinet latch, House of Antique Hardware makes the Cast Iron Cabinet Latch with Oval Turn Piece for $11.19. Above: The Martha Stewart Living Matchbox Door Latch comes in Polished Nickel (shown), Bedford Nickel, and Bedford Brass; $6.97 each at Home Depot. Above: The colonial-style Forged Iron Arrowhead Lift Style Surface Latch is made in the US and is available for $12.09 from House of Antique Hardware. Above: The Shutter Bar or Latch is made of solid brass and available finished in polished nickel (shown), polished unlacquered brass, or oil-rubbed bronze; $13.75 at Historic House Parts. Above: The Small Cast Brass Cupboard Latch in an Antique-by-Hand finish is a hand-finished reproduction style from House of Antique Hardware for $20.79 each. For more cabinet hardware, see our posts:
