10 Easy Pieces: Porch Lights

Janet Hall May 11, 2011

If you're lucky enough to live in a house with a porch, you'll need illumination for summer evenings: here are some ideas for ceiling lights. For more options, see 10 Easy Pieces: Barnhouse-Style Outdoor Lighting and 10 Easy Pieces: Outdoor Bulkhead Lighting.

OVERHEAD FLUSHMOUNT FIXTURES

Above: The handmade Pewter and Brass Onion Ceiling Lamp with handblown glass orb is an adaptation of the classic onion lantern used on fishing schooners. All models are available in copper, brass, or pewter; $189 to $409 from the Nauset Lantern Shop on Cape Cod.

Above: Traditionalists should also consider the Marion 6 Classic Ceiling Fixture with a simple white shade from Schoolhouse Electric; $145.

Above: Based in Berkeley, Metro Lighting's fixtures are inspired by Arts Nouveau and Craftsman aesthetics. We especially like their Acorn series, including the Acorn Flush Mount Fixture (AC-041). Suited for outdoor use, the fixture measures 10 inches in diameter and is available with many shade options; $185 for the fixture only, $280 as shown.

Above: A Remodelista favorite, the Alabax Ceiling Fixture is available in black or white porcelain and can be specified with a UL damp rating; $119 at Schoolhouse Electric.

Above: The Sebring Outdoor Ceiling Light (shown in black) is $95.40 at CSN Lighting.

PENDANT FIXTURES

Above: The Captains Light Pendant is available in several finishes, including galvanized steel, painted (shown), and copper. Prices start at $935 for the galvanized finish at Circa Antiques.

Above: The Moravian Star Pendant light is a classic choice for the porch; My Danilo imports a wide array of sizes and styles from Mexico and hand-wires them in Lynn, Massachusetts, to create UL-listed pendant lights; prices start at $92 for a 9-Inch Glass Star.

Above: The Willamette 4-Inch Pendant Light with a clear glass shade is available in several finishes, including vintage brass (shown); $204 for the fixture and shade at Schoolhouse Electric (specify UL damp rating when ordering).

A simplified take on classic styles from Holloways of Ludlow: The Montparnasse Porch Light in a nickel finish (above L) is £139. The Strathmore Lantern (above R) is available in three finishes: nickel, unlacquered brass, and antique; £245 to £325, depending on finish.
