10 Easy Pieces: Hip Hotel Shop Finds

Sarah Lonsdale August 31, 2011

We first noticed a new breed of hotel shops when we stayed at the Ace in Portland, Oregon, a while back. Since then, we've been taking note of a compelling range of goods on offer at hotel shops that goes beyond the basic bathrobe. Here are ten favorites:

Above: Francesca favors the Standard Hotel's signature off-white muslin quilted Bedding Coverlet; $350 for the queen size from the Standard Shop.

Above: Janet mixes her drinks with a Parisian Cocktail Shaker; $42 from San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels.

Above: On her next trip to Tokyo, Sarah has the Hotel Claska on her itinerary; until then, she's eyeing the home accessories at the Do Gallery & Shop, curated by Takeo Okuma, who sources simple, utilitarian products from all over Japan, including the black and white Croquis Tea Cups shown above; 1,050 yen.

Above: The Ace Hotel NYC Pendleton Plaid Blanket is made of soft, non-scratchy wool by the Oregon Pendleton Woolen Mills; $225 for the queen size (twin and king also available); for a tour of the premises, go to Hotels, Lodging & Restaurants: Ace Hotel in New York.

Above: Made in Portland, Oregon, from crushed pearl and other natural ingredients, Pearl + Luxury Soap is a staple at the Ace Hotels; $24 for two large bars or four small bars via the Ace Hotel Shop.

Above: The 100 percent cotton prewashed Waffle Blanket from W Hotel is $176 and works well as a summer coverlet.

Above: The Rudolph Throw from eco-chic Hidden Hotel in Paris is made of pure alpaca wool on one side and natural delave linen on the other, with leather detailing; email for pricing.

Above: Deborah Berke & Partners designed the 21C Museum Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, which is reason enough for a visit; plus, we like the shop featuring artisan works, including the Hotel Wee Felt Bowl; $18.

Above: The Thunderbird Ashtray, from the Thunderbird Hotel in Marfa, Texas, doubles as a desk receptacle (a holder of paper clips and rubber bands, perhaps?); $7.

Above: Take a bit of Montauk surf culture home with the Organic Cotton Beach Tote; $48 at King & Grove Hotels (see the project at Hotels, Lodging & Restaurants: Ruschmeyer's in Montauk).
