Kubus Goes Glam: Our Favorite Candleholder Now in Copper

November 12, 2013

Architect Mogens Lassen’s angular Kubus Candleholder, a design that dates to 1962, has won us over. Julie was the first to fixate on it, after spotting it in its native surroundings in a Danish flat. Since then, we’ve all had our turns pining over the item. In its lacquered steel version it’s quite stark looking, so we’re pleased to see it now in copper–a warmer look that’s perfect for this time of year.

When Lassen, a pioneer of Danish functionalism, designed the candle holder a half century ago, he saw it as a reaction to traditional candlesticks, which he felt were too ornate. We think the copper Kubus strikes just the right balance: a sharp arrangement with a hint of gleam.

Brought back into production by the designer’s grandson, Sí¸ren Lassen, it’s 8 inches tall and 5.75 inches wide, and available for $225 through Design Within Reach.
