Wonderful design. This same house was featured Christmas Day on Arch Daily, a site I strongly recommend. I spent a summer — it now seems a hundred years ago — on a small island off the coast of Denmark where I learned to do nothing. Since then it seems strange that Americans generally seek crowded, active places for their vacations. Scandinavians have developed a very finely tuned sense of solitude. I think the book speaks volumes. My father might have said, “Put that away, we’re on vacation.”
This cabin could make me want to leave Italy. Seriously. You can probably only sit it out in a bikini like that two days a year but who cares. The way they poured the cement base directly on the flattened stone is attractive and practical. I wonder how they stabilized it -- with rebar? Did they have to drill into the stone? I would imagine they did. I can imagine the wood needs to be done every year because it probably takes one heck of a beating. It is a great looking living space.
I really like the sculptural quality of the architecture and the white recessed spaces that invite one to enter and occupy. Bravo!
This is an amazing little house! I love the black/white, inside/outside,
open/enclosing aspect of it with all its corners and interstices for the body as you follow the sun and light around the house.
This and another house called "Boxhome" by the Finnish architect Sami Rintala are two of my favorites. Coincidentally, Boxhome is also located in Norway.
Wonderful job!
The shape of this house really interests me. The low roof sort of gives it a more modern appearance, and the black and white add visual interest. Very captivating.
