Shopping for someone else’s baby, toddler, or young child can be fun, but it’s not always easy. And here at Remodelista, we prefer to eschew that which is excessive, plastic, and battery-operated, adding to the challenge.
Here, a list of some of my favorite personal finds, all made from natural materials, sure to please both child and parent—and, hopefully, serve as a superior hand-me-down or family heirloom in the years to follow.
Above: The Nobodinoz French Linen Pony Rattle in Blue is ready for babies from birth up; $36 at Smallable. Above: The Baby Brush Set from Salter House is a set that grows as baby’s hair does, from early wispy hairs to tangled locks. For three months and up; $30. Above: Liberty prints are an instant way to liven up any nursery or kids room. The Coco & Wolf Heirloom Quilt is made with Liberty Katie, Millie, and Floral Stencil fabrics; £139 for the cot bed size. Above: Danish knitwear brand Deima makes the Knitwear Kids Hoodie for five-year-olds in a range of colors; $108.46 at Deima Knitwear. Above: From Leo Leo Copenhagen, the Watercolor Play-to-Go Toy Carry Case is a foldable, travel-friendly play carpet with a watercolor scene and pockets for toy cars and such; $58 at Merci Milo. Above: One of our favorite toys at home is a small set of bird calls handmade by Monsieur François Morel in the Drôme region of southern France. Morel has been making wooden bird calls since 1980 using locally sourced material, and they’re great for the outdoors and indoors as music makers. A set of six Western American Birdcalls is $125 at The Wooden Wagon. Above: Kleynimals is a company that specializes in rounded stainless steel “keys” for babies, but they also make the Stainless Steel Jangles, which, when my daughter was an infant, were the most chic stroller toy I could find and a total hit. I still remember the sound of delicate jangling on long stroller walks. They’re also wearable as bracelets to entertain your baby in your arms. Above: If only I could turn back time and put this Rose Uniacke Baby Blanket on our baby registry. My family would have called me crazy, but the bright yellow cashmere enshrouding newborn skin would have been worth it. The blanket is £360. Above: Dutch brand KASSL Editions makes a puffy pillow bag, and, in recent years, they translated the design to a diaper bag. The Baby Bag in Oil Cobalt includes a changing mat; €395. Above: Handmade Cotton Printed Bibs are available in 12 different fabrics; $15 at Makié.
