From Sarah:
Berkeley-based architects Fernau Hartman designed this modern rustic space for a house in Bolinas, the Marin County bohemian coastal enclave. When retracted, the garage door dissolves the boundaries between indoor and outdoors, and the daybeds on wheels can function as lounging areas in either locale.

Last week we posted a kitchen on wheels by French architects Karine Chartier and Thomas Corbasson, which got us thinking about portable storage for the most used room in the house. Improbably, Chef’s Catalog has one of the best pieces we’ve seen, made of solid oak and recycled steel. Streamlined proportions, too.

We love the mix of mod (streamlined built-in marble sink, sleek oval bath) and trad (cloth-cord pendant lamp, vintage mirrors) in this all-white bath.

I’ve long admired the handprinted Belgian linen fabrics of Santa Barbara–based Raoul Textiles, founded by Sally McQuillan, a painter who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Last spring, the company opened its first independent showroom in LA’s Pacific Design Center (8687 Melrose Avenue), designed to look like an English library, with creaky wooden floors, upholstered furniture and antiques, and stacks of books on the decorative arts (which can be borrowed). Go to Raoul Textiles for a list of additional showrooms.

Solange de la Fouchardière is a partner in Ochre, and her Shoreditch loft (located in a former garment factory) features the UK design group’s signature moody glamour. The three principals of Ochre (Solange plus Harriet Maxwell McDonald and Joanna Bibby, art school classmates) have mastered the art of mixing textures—distressed velvet pillows, coconut husk mirrors, crystal chandeliers, mercury glass. Almost all the lighting, furniture, and accessories featured in the loft can be viewed online at Ochre and Ochre Store or seen in situ at Ochre at 462 Broome Street in Tribeca.

Another idea for the “ode to simplicity” file. Spotted this kitchen on Dwell in a story discussing the merits of bamboo flooring. What I think deserves praise here are the amazingly simple and great-looking plywood storage bins used as an alternative to the traditional kitchen cabinet.
