In Memoriam: Diane Keaton, Remodelista’s Fairy Godmother

Above: A photo from Diane Keaton’s Fashion First book. She was a multi-hyphenate before the concept existed; she was an accomplished designer, she could sing and dance, she could act, she was a naturally gifted writer.

In the early days of Remodelista, we were lucky enough to catch the attention of Diane Keaton (she described her enthusiasm as a “serial addiction to Remodelista”). She was one of our first devoted (and most supportive) readers. She blurbed our first book Remodelista: A Manual for the Considered Home and even called me when she got her copy—I can still hear her voice, full of enthusiasm and delight: “HI JULIE! IT’S DIANE! I LOVE THE BOOK!” It was one of the most thrilling calls I’ve ever received.

Over the next couple of years, she contributed posts, took us to dinner in SF and LA, and introduced us to others in her circle. Were we starstruck and flattered? Yes, and thoroughly charmed by her brio, her distinctive and seemingly fearless approach to life and design and fashion. Her imprimatur meant everything to us in those early days of the web; to be recognized by someone we endlessly respected and adored? It was breathtaking.

Like everyone, we were shocked and immensely saddened by her death. We will miss her.

Here’s a look back at her posts for Remodelista:
