Father’s Day 2020: 10 Gift Suggestions from a Cool Dad

June 16, 2020

Myles Tipley is a DJ and design hound married to fellow DJ Lindsey Tipley (@djlindsey). They have a son, Henry, 8, and a daughter, Amel, 2. A year ago, the family decamped from New York to Atlanta to live a simpler life and be near Lindsey’s family.

Myles used to blog about inspired rooms; now he posts them on Instagram @myleshenry—and about five years ago started contributing to Remodelista. Whenever we’re in need of fresh ideas, we say, “Let’s ask Myles.” So for Father’s Day gift suggestions, we gave him a call. Here’s what’s on his top 10 list, in his own words:

noah&#8\2\17;s expandable mesh tote, \$98, looks like the perfect beach bag 17
Above: Noah’s Expandable Mesh Tote, $98, looks like the perfect beach bag. The choice of materials are strategic in that they allow the sand to fall out while enabling your swim trunks and wet suit to dry.

Noah is a super-rad, ethical company based in NYC: I know co-founders, Brendon and Estelle—Brendon sold me my first surfboard in 1995 at Rick’s Surf on Long Island. I also wear their clothes. Noah pays fair wages and works with only ethical production companies. Even down to their minimal-waste packaging, everything is considered.

Above: My family and I start EVERY morning with music. Henry pulls a few records off the shelf that we all dance around to while getting breakfast ready. It’s been such a fun thing to share with my son and now our daughter, too. Maxo’s Lil Big Man, $31.99, is one of my favorite records to come out this past year, and I need to own it on vinyl. Also, it’s extra important to support independent musicians, now more than ever.

Above: Quartier’s tagline is “unique ceramics made by a nice human being.” The stoneware Sainte Croix Light, €180, patterned with rainbow specks, is made to sit on a tabletop. Right now production is on pause—creator Romain Garcin is waiting to relocate from Lisbon to NYC—but I’ll gladly take an IOU. Keep track of his latest @quartier_ceramics.

Above: On my Wanting to Try List: I’ve heard great things about Kings County Distillery’s Straight Bourbon; $69 for 750 ml, $23 for 200 ml. Based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, they began as the country’s smallest commercial craft distillery, and their bourbon won double gold in the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Of late, they’ve also been making a great-looking 80 percent alcohol Hand Sanitizer.

Above: Lindsey and I buy each other art for holidays and occasions. I really love Bernie Kaminski’s papier-maché versions of everyday things, such as this Restaurant Check, $50. He recently sold $3,000 worth via Instagram and donated it all to @blklivesmatter. At my request, he’s made 20 more exclusively for Remodelista readers, and 100 percent of the proceeds with go to BLM. To buy, go to @berniekaminski and direct message Bernie.

Above: Wax Poetics is one of my favorite magazines—it’s a music magazine that you hold onto like a book. After stopping publication, it was brought back by popular demand, and issues, filled with stories from their archive, have become collector’s items among the record collector/DJ community.

Above: My British friend Anoma told me about how incredible this neighborhood is: an enclave that in the 1980s, architect Walter Segal designed and planned as self-build, enabling people to construct their own houses. The book Walters Way & Segal Close, $40, was created by two residents of these houses in collaboration with their neighbors.

Above: Fathers need coffee if they want any chance of surviving. The creators of NYC clothing brand Groveland, Mac Huelster and Joe Garvey, had been working on opening a little coffee pop-up before the pandemic hit. Because of the current situation, they decided to put the shop on hold and, in the meantime, to sell their Yirgacheffe Bioya Ethiopian Young Coffee online, $17 for 12 ounces—and donate 100 percent of the proceeds to Black Visions Collective.
i could eat pizza every day—until recently, my cousin and i owned 26
Above:  I could eat pizza every day—until recently, my cousin and I owned two pizza restaurants on Long Island. Now, I’m a committed home pizza chef. The Ooni Pro Multi-Fuel Outdoor Pizza Oven, $599, is well-thought-out, both in terms of design and functionally. It burns wood pellets that you can find at most local hardware stores, and produces a really nice pie.

Here’s my recipe for killer home pizza. If you don’t have an Ooni, just use a pizza stone and crank your oven up as hot as you can get it .

Pizza Dough
1 cup plus 1 tbsp 00 Flour
1 cup plus 1 tbsp and 2 tsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp fine sea salt
3/4 tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil

Pizza Sauce
Drained can San Marzano tomatoes (the key is buying best-quality tomatoes)
1 ounce (2 1/8 tbsp) olive oil
1 tbsp sea salt

Blend sauce using a food processor or blender till almost smooth. It takes a bit of playing with: add more olive oil or salt to get it right.
If you want pepperoni that cups nicely, hunt down Rosa Grandé Cup and Char Pepperoni.
