The Candle Renaissance has come for the disposable birthday candle. No more stubby, swirled versions from the supermarket made with artificial colors (and even worse ingredients—like paraffin wax, which is a petroleum product). Lately we’re taking note of alternatives that, like the most elegant hand-dipped tapers, are made from beeswax and a little more special than the baking aisle standard fare.

It’s enough to inspire us to get out the birthday candles—or, as they’re being rightfully rebranded, celebration candles—much more. Friends over for dinner? What a delight to put a candle in the dessert. Made it to Friday? That calls for a candle.

Have a look at three of our editors’ picks:

Above: “I love these beeswax birthday candles shaped like numbers. I discovered them via Artisans & in Columbus, Ohio,” writes Margot. “They’re also available directly from the maker: Waxing Moon of Bozeman, Montana.”

Above: “I picked up these candles by Ovo Things for my husband’s birthday, and we’ve since lit them for occasions of all kinds,” says Annie. “The colorful cotton wicks really delight me. And unlike grocery store versions, which often get tossed, I will keep lighting them til they’re stubs.”

Above: Julie first spotted Wax Atelier, and all of us on the edit team have since become acolytes. We love the looks of their slender Celebration Candles. Each candle is designed to burn for one hour, “perfect for a quiet break to read, meditate, or just pause.” Also available from Bloomist.
