August 9, 2017

The winner of the 2017 Remodelista Considered Design Awards Best Professional UK Interior is Fawn Interiors of Alresford, England.

The firm’s project was chosen as a finalist by guest judge Sam Hamilton, who had this to say: “This is a beautifully realized modern/functional kitchen that honors the heritage of this aged house. The warmth and personality of this space is calling my name! Bravo!”

Fawn Interiors’ Design Statement: “Our kitchen project for this thatched cottage (approximate age: 250 years old) had to solve the mix of old, rustic elements with modern appliances and materials. To tie the two together, we commissioned handmade kitchen cabinets in modern colors and mixed these with industrial lighting and fittings.”

Q: What were your practical goals for the project?
A: To create a comfortable family kitchen that enhanced the period features but also incorporated modern conveniences.

Q: What solutions did you find to your design problems?
A: Our main problem was incorporating enough storage (which we solved with large integrated larder units) and designing effective lighting systems without a central light fitting (because of the original beams). We solved this with fantastic overhead moveable lights and smaller spotlights to illuminate the work surface.

Q: What was your biggest splurge?
A: The polished marble work surface.

Q: Where did you cut corners?
A: We sourced the cabinetry with a great company that supplied them unfinished and then got a painter to finish them onsite.

Q: What is your dream project?
A: Residentially, it would be a Georgian rectory, and commercially, a boutique hotel and pub.

Q: Favorite local shop?
A: Long Barn in Alresford, Hampshire. It’s full of individually sourced quirky items, perfect for uniquely accessorizing any room.
