Once a standard item in traditional Japanese kitchens, a tawashi can be used for scouring and scrubbing vegetables as well as delicate pots and pans. The brushes, are handmade by specialist craftsmen, who bound shuro palm tightly with wire in a cylindrical shape that fits well in the hand. The shuro is a tree in the palm family, native to Kyushu that has a fibrous bark. Used to make ropes and brushes, shuro brooms and brushes have been used in Japan since the Edo period.
