Michael Thonet (1796-1871) was a German-Austrian cabinet maker, known for the invention of bentwood furniture, which meant the beginning of Modern Design. Le Corbusier used Thonet chairs for his projects and mentioned them as Modern Furniture. Alexander von Vegesack started to collect Thonet furniture, set up a Thonet Museum in Boppard am Rhein and co-founded the Vitra Design Museum in 1989.
