London-based design team Clarke & Reilly has reinvented the classic chaise longue for modern homes. Less ornate than its predecessors, yet retaining the classic long seat and curved side rest, this tufted-cushion seat is as lovely in family rooms as it is tucked into a dressing room or boudoir. Covered in swathes of vintage linen that have been colored with all-natural dye, the fabric will fade slightly over time, which only adds to the character of the piece. The carved hardwood legs are covered in natural stain using the 18th century European process of “Japanning,” a labor-intensive but longer-lasting method of finishing wood. It takes eight people to handcraft each of these pieces, ensuring an enduring quality that will be enjoyed for years, if not generations, to come.
