Sanne Hop is in “the busting out phase of her life,” Margot wrote when we toured Sanne’s live-work atelier in Amsterdam last month. Sanne’s shared her day-to-day creative life with thousands of followers (155 thousand, that is, as of this writing) for over a decade. But now? Now the mom of six with a PhD in history has launched her own concept shop, and she’s infusing her life (and our Instagram feeds) with punchy color, irreverence, and joy. If that’s what busting out looks like, sign us up.

Sanne writes: “I had the experience of working with so many talented small makers for a while and had a dream of bringing their work together in a physical place—so people could walk in, see the products, and hear the stories behind them. Besides, I had my own handcraft to add, which is making beeswax candles with my own hands.”

Today, Sanne writes in from Amsterdam with a new-to-us source for linen sheets (which we’re now obsessed with), the last thing she does before bed, and a counterintuitive trick for a colorful space:

You’re invited to dinner. What’s your go-to gift?

I think that must be one of my own makings: a beeswax candle. Maybe my newest model that I’ve created myself from an old Parisian bottle. That candle is called La Bouteille and makes a beautiful piece on the dinner table.

What’s on your bedside table?

A book, a good magazine like Blumenhaus, a glass of water for the night, and a little candle. I love the old fashioned way of blowing out a candle when going to sleep.

What’s your desert island design/art/architecture-related book?

I love The Kinfolk Home very much, because it gives you a view into people’s domestic spaces. And to see how people live, what they hold as treasures, says a lot about their character. I just love the stories behind the images. What brings joy and meaning to people, and why, is always something intriguing for me.

What podcast or playlist do you put on when you need inspiration?

Podcasts I don’t listen to. I am just not that person. Music yes, always. It keeps me going while making candles or having the shop open. It can create a very lovely atmosphere. For shop days I prefer classical music in the background, with a little twist. Right now I am playing Foule Sentimentale by Chilly Gonzales.

What’s a film or TV show whose aesthetic has stuck with you?

I hardly ever watch TV, but I do love arthouse movies. I love Wim Wenders and Almodovar.

Which Instagram account do you go to for design inspiration?

@remodelista of course; @englisheccentrichome for some lovely British vibes; @nathalie_lete for beautiful colors and prints and French beauty; and @askogeng for the minimalistic.

What has been your best house upgrade?

Painting the floors creamy white. Everything just stands out so much more. I love colors very much, but this brings a joyful clean start, and from there I feel everything is possible.

A simple or budget-friendly design move you wish you’d known sooner?

When wanting to replace my kitchen here, I chose a very simple Ikea kitchen. I didn’t have a big budget and wanted to just get something fresh. I did install a few nice vintage racks, but in the end I think I would rather have had the time to look into gathering old (French) bits and pieces and built it together into something unique.

My favorite sheets are…

Definitely linen; I love the Dutch Timeless Linen, but also Dazed but Amazed from Australia is super special. As an alternative I love the floras of the French Lucas du Tertre.

My favorite paint color for the bedroom is…

Buttery, creamy off-white.

My unpopular design opinion is…

I think that must be being too messy, haha. Even though everybody walking in here says they like it because they feel at home, I know my space is standing out so much more when organized in a tidy (but quirky) way. Always working on that 🙂

Your design pet peeve?

We have a cat at the house, which is equally cute and annoying. There are a lot of things you cannot do because of the pet. I guess the cuteness wins, but having the litter box in the kitchen…

My go-to kitchen utensil is…

My newest very old coffee grinder! It has flowers, it’s very slow, but it’s very rewarding and brings a delicious coffee in the end!

Three words that describe my design style:

Calm yet colorful and whimsical.

First design love?

Everything Thonet and Ercol.

What item from your closet do you have on repeat?

Wool pants. I live in those. Whether it be Babaa, l’Envers, Jaggery, Nonna Lietta, I love living in those day and night.

Favorite design shop to visit (online or in person)?

The Six Bells in New York. Only the window makes me want to go there. And a forever favorite is Straw in London.

What is the last thing you purchased for your house?

A new very old cabinet coming from a pharmacy here in Amsterdam. It’s from the 1890s, in a beautiful patina, and it’s just so delicately beautiful.

Something you’re coveting?

A very structured, tidy space with clean floors 🙂

I don’t leave the house without…

Something on my head 🙂
