Shadow Architect, P.C. is an NYC-based Architecture & Interior Design studio delivering personalized, visually engaging environments for living, working, dining, and retreating from the everyday.

Founded by Architect Larry Cohn in 2008, the studio focuses on residential and commercial work in New York City and the surrounding areas, with projects varying widely in scope, budget, and vision. We are problem-solvers and bring a sense of pride & energy to each project we take on, working closely with our clients to understand their vision. Throughout the process, we continue to involve ourselves in the investigation of materials and form, creating unique design solutions to bring each project to life. Our collaborative approach and technical expertise result in well-built and designed projects and long-lasting relationships among our clients, consultants, and collaborators.

Wherever possible, we incorporate environmentally responsible design practices, using “green” or otherwise sustainable materials and ideas of passive heating and cooling, energy efficiency, and the repurposing of materials and buildings.

EAST 57 AERIE - NEW YORK, NEW YORK

After many years living abroad in Italy, the owner of this apartment sought out Shadow Architects to create her new home in New York City. The apartment had good bones but needed updating and personality. Entering the renovated space, a custom-pattern marble floor and dark paneling in the entry now sets the tone for the art-filled home. Framed entries branch off into the living areas and bedroom hall, and a new custom kitchen is visible through new blackened metal and glass doors. The living area is centered around a new modern fireplace surround, with a background wall of new cabinetry, and new lighting and AV systems have been installed throughout. As an integral part of the design process, the Shadow Architects team also worked with the client to couple new furnishings and finishes with art pieces throughout the home.

THE MUSKET ROOM - NOLITA, NEW YORK

The Musket Room brings together a far-reaching group of New York-based restaurateurs, a New Zealander chef, an English interior designer, and New York City native Shadow Architect to re-invigorate a historic structure to create a showcase for an elegant food and drink menu. The firm worked with Alexander Waterworth Interiors on the floor plan and design, creating a generous bar and seating area at the front of the restaurant, with private seating groupings in the back. The back room also overlooks the new herb garden through large new casement windows. The exterior shell of the front facade was repaired where needed and white-washed to create a chic rustic backdrop for the new furnishings and finishes. Downstairs, the old kitchen was completely gutted, and the architects enlarged and streamlined the cooking area to support chef Matt Lambert’s culinary vision. The Musket Room has been awarded a Michelin Star for two years running.  It was the youngest New York restaurant to ever receive a star after being open just four months.

THE GRETSCH LOFT - WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN

This panoramic loft in The Gretsch had some great bones, but the previous developer conversion was uninspired, concealing original details of the building and cutting off the majority of the loft’s city views from the living area. Working with a creative owner, the team reconceived the loft with a strong palette of woods, concrete, natural stone, blackened metal, and glass. The bold moves of re-exposing the concrete beams of the original structure and installing a centerpiece semi-transparent partition that separates the master bedroom from the living room now highlight the building’s expansive windows and oversized scale.

As part of the re-design, the team also wanted to provide a place to display the owner’s collection of records and other curiosities. Together, they worked with a cabinetmaker and friend of the owner to revamp the kitchen and add other built-in cabinetry along the apartment perimeter, including a record album display wall that smartly conceals a murphy bed for visiting guests. Adding to these layers of the design, Shadow Architect, P.C. worked with the owner to weave in new furnishings amidst older pieces, giving the newly revitalized loft a relaxed, lived-in vibe.

RLW CABIN - SULLIVAN COUNTY, NEW YORK

Built from the ground up on a sloped, heavily wooded lot, the RLW Cabin is both a viewing platform and a protective shelter.  The environmentally sensitive construction incorporates many innovative materials and building methods, earning the home a LEED Silver designation by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for achievement in green homebuilding.  Shadow Architect, P.C. also handled all interiors and built many of the furnishings, including the dining table and master bed.  The cabin was a 2010 Dwell Magazine “Houses We Love” finalist.
