Marian Boswall Landscape Architects, Gardenista

Marian Boswall Landscape Architects was established in 2004, designing private & public spaces and specialising in historic gardens.

We are a small team of landscape architects, garden designers and gardeners, working country wide from our design studio in Kent. We combine horticultural, visual design and project management expertise to provide a complete landscape design service, from conception through planning and tender, to construction and planting. We offer full project management of the build and instructions for future maintenance. Once a garden is finished we hand it over to the owners and gardeners, but keep in touch and often return as the garden develops.

The philosophy of the practice is to combine a deep respect for the natural world with a hands on, practical approach to achieving results. We create beautiful landscapes, often working with listed buildings and in sensitive locations. These landscapes reflect the rich history of the people and the place, and we seek to forge a continuum between the past, the present, and the future. Our designs create biodiversity and conserve habitats, and our planting plans are informed by the naturally occurring plant families of the local area. We embrace modern design and clean lines, and mix this with the craftsmanship and respect for the land of an age gone by.

Using natural materials and careful construction detailing, we work hard at listening, in order to project each client and each site’s unique personality into our designs.

Hole Park is a beautiful private estate in Kent with 15 acres of gardens plus beautiful bluebell woods.

Our continuing work at Hole Park has focused on careful renovation and replanting. Working with the family and head gardener, we have focussed on the Walled Garden, the Millennium Garden and private gardens around the house, and have recently redesigned and replanted the Sundial Garden to include brick and tile work by a local craftsman, a fabulous mosaic by Maggie Howarth and a bespoke Gave Burvill seat.

The Hole Park gardens are open to the public from March to October.

Over several years we have replanted the long borders, renovated the kitchen gardens and terraces and created a potager.

A Kentish farm house within an rare pocket of woodland, this is garden buzzing with wildlife, as well as resident dogs, cats, chickens and even horses.

When we began working here the garden needed renovation, but we wanted to tread lightly, working with the established trees and where possible keeping the framework which had been developed over the previous thirty years by a passionate and organic gardener.

Like many of our projects our work at Court Lodge is on-going and has evolved over time.  We began by re-designing the courtyard garden.

Using local Kent ragstone and Breedon gravel we defined the space to provide a herb scented dining area, with raised beds that burst into colour in spring with Tulipa ‘Mariette’ followed by summer flowering herbaceous perennials and aromatic herbs.
