Architect Visit: Studiomama Beach Chalet

July 15th, 2008

From Julie:

The beach house pared down to the essentials: eat, drink, sleep, view. London-based Danish designer Nina Tolstrup of Studiomama wanted a weekend retreat to escape life in Shoreditch, so she bought a small plot of land on the shore in Whitstable, a seaside town located in northeast Kent. The 388-square-foot structure is located in the middle of a row of 25 tiny cottages, sits on galvanized steel stilts, and is clad with cedar shingles. The interior is sawn softwood; and the focus is the sea view. A sleeping loft accommodates Tolstrup and her husband, and her two children sleep in bunks. Read Tolstrup’s article “How I Built My Dream Beach Hut” in the Guardian. Via the excellent new blog Mopu42; images by Ben Anders.

Totally amazing what you can get rid of when all you want to do is enjoy the view, location and relaxation. I think adding the shingles is just the touch the outside needed to give this tiny little shack character. Wish it were mine.
    Thnks for the post. MB

Would love to know where the sink is from- does anyone know where I might be able to find it?

Is there a washroom, and a floor plan for this unique cabin?

It looks fantastic, but I bet it has greatly devalued the neighbouring huts. It’s unbelievable how much some of these beach huts sell for. One in Hove (East Sussex) last year went for £30,000!

Beautiful. I used to spend a lot of time at Whitstable when I was a kid.

MayBeth: not sure ‘added’ would be right for the shingles, this hut - if I remember the row of huts rightly from my youth - would be directly on the beach.

Great! Where can I get the wooden chair shown beside the
wood stove as an outside scaled-down alternative to the Adirondack
    chair??????
