Architect Visit: Jeffery Broadhurst’s Shack at Hinkle Farm
June 13th, 2008
From Julie:
Washington, DC, architect Jeffery Broadhurst’s off-the-grid shack on South Fork Mountain in West Virginia won notice from Architectural Record Magazine, which called it “simplicity embodied.” The project was entirely DIY: “Broadhurst’s friends and neighbors helped him assemble it, using products pulled from the shelves of a home-improvement retailer. Simple board-and-batten siding and a standing-seam, terne-coated steel roof sits atop a wood platform supported by four pressure-treated pine posts.” Lit by oil lamps and heated with a woodstove, the 140-square-foot structure is accessible only with an off-road vehicle. Broadhurst calls it “a logical step between tent camping and the as-yet-unrealized weekend cottage.”

What an awesome shack! Put a river in front of it and I’ll take it.
