Domestic Science: Washing Up Bowl

From Janet:

The sink is too big. The bucket too deep. The Ole Jenson rubber washing-up bowl is just right. For those small cleaning jobs, consider this rubber bowl that can adapt to whatever task is at hand. Available for $69 at scandinaviandesigncenter.com in several colors; brush included.

Shopper’s Diary: Atomic Garden

From Julie:

Let’s get it out of the way: the wife of Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has opened a housewares/clothing shop in Oakland. The good news is that Adrienne Armstrong and her business partner, Jamie Kidson, have a great aesthetic. Almost everything in the shop is sustainable, including the reclaimed shelving. We bought a Fog Linen apron; several items from the Japanese textile company are available; tea towels, aprons, napkins, sewing notions. For a tour of the store, go to More Ways to Waste Time.

Shopper’s Diary: Trove Laguna Beach

From Julie:

For the slightly louche, bohemian look, a la Julian Schnabel’s public spaces for the Gramercy Park Hotel and Roman & Williams’ lobby for the Royalton Hotel; characterful antiques with a slightly decadent edge; go to trovelaguna.com:

Slow Design: Recycled Metal Tiles

RECYCLED METAL TILES

From Janet:

Recycled metal tiles are well suited for countertops, kitchen and bath surfaces, and backsplashes. They do not fingerprint like stainless steel, and they are lighter than stone, very durable, and heat resistant (up to 300 degrees).

Below: Aluminum and brass tiles from woman-owned, Wisconsin-based Eco-Friendly Flooring. Square field tiles ranging in size from 2 to 12 inches and starting at $35 per square foot.

Eleek also manufactures recycled aluminum tiles using a finishing process that smooths and polishes the metal, revealing an organic River Rock surface that resembles weathered stone. Available shapes include squares, rectangles, frontwrap, and backsplash. Approximately $50 per square foot. Samples available; for information go to eleekinc.com.
