Slow Design: Eco-Cem Tiles

From Sarah

Eco-Cem tiles and panels from ECOverings are made from natural elements combined with recycled materials. Comprised of cement mixed with recycled wood, Eco-Cem comes in 48-by-48-inch squares in a range of colors and can be used as flooring, countertops, or cladding. To read the company’s manifesto and learn more about the LEED ratings for its products, go to coveringsetc.com. Brooklyn-based AK Tile Studio offers Eco-Cem for $21.28 per square foot; go to aktilestudio.com. To find more dealers, go to ECOvering’s dealer locator at coveringsetc.com:

Architect Visit: Fernlund + Logan

From Julie:

Swedish-born and -educated Solveig Fernlund and Columbia-educated Neil Logan comprise Fernlund + Logan; for this loft on Lafayette Street, they used wide-board, lightly oiled Douglas Fir flooring and installed a full-height volume that contains bathrooms and the laundry and is layered with storage units on two sides. The architects have also designed furniture for arvidinc.com
