From Julie:
There’s nothing like a trip to kindle new design ideas. I went to Portland, OR, a couple of weeks ago (see Ace Hotel post) and dined at my new favorite restaurant, ClarkLewis (1001 SE Water Avenue; 503-235-2294). Like eating in an ultrachic garage, with fantastic food.

Of course I fell madly in love with the bulbous water carafe blown from recycled glass on the table; the waitress revealed that it was by a glassblowing workshop in town called Esque Studio. Visit their site at www.esque-studio.com to view their work, which ranges from art glass pieces priced in the thousands to more utilitarian (and more moderately priced) pieces. San Francisco site www.branchhome.com also sells a selection of pieces.
Off pitcher and cup (10 inches high); $189 (also available at www.branchhome.com):

Antler light (18 inches high); $525:

Drip light (12 inches across); $945:

Venetian pieces (9 inches high); $189 each:

From Julie:
Is anyone else weary of the Waterworks look for the bathroom—the glossy white subway tile, gleaming new retro-styled fixtures, expensive porcelein consoles? It all amounts to a tedious sameness. Hence my attraction to this casually chic washroom. Note the exposed plumbing, the fluorescent light strip, and the matte black tile floor. Even the exposed brick wall (which usually elicits unpleasant memories of the mid-80s NYC bachelor pad look) is appealingly rough.

“Lampshades are the shoes and handbags of the design world.” - Nina Campbell
A few days ago, we stumbled upon Meteor Lights’ lampshade workshop on 17th Street in the Mission District of San Francisco. Meteor’s retro drum and two-tiered lampshades are handmade with the same fiberglass and resin parchment used on lampshades in the forties and fifties. Each shade is hand-stained, so the color options are infinite. Visit meteorlights.com for more information and to view the custom shade selector.
We especially liked the two-tiered white shade used as a pendant light (see below) and the sconce shields.

Even modernistas like a bit of pattern in their lives now and then. In keeping with my Bloomsbury obsession, I am in love with the somehow quite mod painted ceramics of Oxford, England–based Isis Ceramics by Deborah Sears.

I favor her black-painted pieces; keeps it kind of goth. Note to bargain hunters: The 8 1/2 inch Palladian patterned candlestick below is currently listed on ebay for a Buy-It-Now price of $92 (two are available at ebay.com).
