“It has never not felt spiritual. From the very first time I walked into the space five years ago—when it wasn’t even my studio!—I felt an affinity for it. It feels sacred. Everyone who visits says something similar. I believe in the energy of places. It’s nurturing and warm and welcoming.”
he gives us a tour of his shared studio—a space he likens to church, a place where he can stretch out and make a mess, a room to call his own.
“The studio has windows on three sides, so how the light moves through our space is something that is hard to ignore. It is just beautiful,” says George.
“Georgia’s husband is a contractor, and they were both influenced by [conceptual artist and architect] David Ireland, who championed a form of process as the end goal,” explains George.
An early galley of his book sits next to some of the tools that went into its making.
The book grew out of a personal project: In 2016, he decided to draw/paint a portrait of an important Black figure every day of Black History Month.
Luna, Georgia’s dog, is a constant companion in the studio.
