Renovation Challenge: A Historic South London Home Updated for a Young Family

This project by Fraher & Findlay involved more than a few complications. The building’s listed historical status meant that all plans had to be legally approved, and its unique crescent shape meant everything had to be custom. But the result is an open, modern design set inside a classic shell.

Just off the entry hall is this coat room, with a streamlined and fun orange coat rack..

"The [glazed] door set brings in the natural light but also creates a division of space when needed,” says design director Lizzie Webster.

The homeowners are involved in design and creative industries. “They had an extensive art and furniture collection that we designed around right from the beginning,” says Lizzie.

A pair of Borge Mogensen Spanish Chairs flank the fireplace.

Also on the parlor floor is the custom kitchen by joinery workshop Shape London.

The dining area is open to the kitchen. Pendant lights from deVOL float above the island and the dining table.

On the second floor are the main bedroom, pictured here, ensuite bath, a guest room, and guest bath.

Two built-in closets create a short hallway to the ensuite bath.

In the traditional ensuite bath, a freestanding glass and steel cabinet adds a contemporary touch.
