Nick Spain is not an interior designer by training, strictly speaking.
“This is the first non-apartment they’re in as a family, so I felt super privileged be a part of creating their first true home,” Spain says.

First Floor
The dramatic first-floor hallway, with elaborate moldings preserved, sets the stage for the rest of the house.
In the dining room, pale paint—Benjamin Moore’s Collingwood in a matte finish at 25 percent dilution—lends a slightly ghostly feel.
The team preserved the intricate picture-frame molding.
Just off the dining room is a narrow parlor, fitted with a blue velvet couch across from the original fireplace.
In the living room, Spain reserved the house’s warm Arts and Crafts-style wood paneling and coffered ceiling. While some people find using other people’s items a bit off-putting, I love the fact that each piece has its own personal story that it adds to a space.
Caned chairs flank a breakfast table, set into a bow window. The stained glass at the tops of the windows is original.
Second Floor
The second floor houses a master suite, Kocher’s solution to make the previously awkward, chopped-up space feel more cohesive.
Sculptural flowers on the nightstand. The bedside lights are the Astrid Sconces from Schoolhouse.
The adjacent sitting area also got the tone-on-tone treatment.
A new half bath on the second floor is papered with a floral find, “from Wayfair of all places,” Spain says.
Up to the top floor, the least traditional of the three.
Third Floor
The girls’ room has a pink-on-pink scheme tempered by black and a bit of irreverence. They chose everything from the bedspreads to the bedside lamp, and we immediately all loved this chandelier [the Lilly Pulitzer Polished Palm Tree Chandelier] from Pottery Barn Kids.
Clean lines counteract the soft pink paint color, which is Benjamin Moore’s Odessa Pink—at full saturation to the top of the floral paneling, and at 50 percent dilution above it.
