Kitchen of the Week: A Harmonious New Kitchen for a 1970s A-Frame

How to gracefully incorporate a new kitchen in a vintage A-frame? The couple, who are both in television production and come from the UK and Europe, had worked with Henrybuilt on their Manhattan kitchen and appreciated the company’s devotion to impeccable craftsmanship and clean-lined functionality.

The owners wanted to introduce a modern kitchen with the least amount of intervention. The cabinets are finished with Storm Grey laminate and anodized aluminum knobs, both from Space Theory and only sold as part of a complete design.
The living area is open plan and has its original knotty pine paneling.
Space Theory’s Opencase system of wall panels, here in anodized aluminum, were custom fit and serve as a backsplash kitted out with storage.
Opencase accessories, including hanging rods and oak shelves, are designed to mount to the panels via a grid of stainless steel rods and can easily be moved in and out or shifted around.
The counters are PaperStone, an eco-friendly pressed paper pulp often used in science labs: read about it in Remodeling 101: Paper Composite Counters for the Kitchen.
In addition to shelves, there’s an Opencase wine rack and a paper towel holder (see below).
The clients installed new cedar-framed windows and a glazed door that works as a counter balance to the black fridge.
A detail of the remarkably thin and durable Paperstone counter and the oak cabinet finish.
Positioned to take in the views, the oval Saarinen Dining Table is surrounded by midcentury church chairs sourced from Amsterdam Modern in LA.
The A-Frame is anchored by its original brick hearth. Henrybuilt has showrooms in NYC, LA, Seattle, and the Bay Area, and is a longstanding member of the Remodelista Architect and Designer Directory.
