The Hanko Bed is an heirloom quality modern addition to any family. Precise lines, a sturdy build, and minimalist form combine into a delightful fusion of strength and grace. The bed floats off the ground, resting on inset wood legs, and features a solid wood frame and headboard, a stable understructure with steel components, and solid wood slats. This bed pairs nicely with a set of Hanko Side Tables.
The Hanko Bed is part of a new family of pieces that was inspired by our travels/study in Finland in 2005. 10 years later, the impact of all the wonderful design objects we experienced and lived with stayed with us. It was a pleasure to see examples of famous Finnish design (buildings and furniture by Alvar Aalto, among many others), but the thing that struck us most of all was that good design seemed to be the norm rather than the exception.
We were able to draw from this experience during the design process for a recent custom project – a bedroom set for local clients – and we are pleased to present what came out of that: The Hanko Series (named after a town in Finland), a collection of functional pieces founded on paired down forms. The bedroom set turned out great, and the next custom project we embarked on with the same clients yielded the Hanko Chair.
