I did something similar with my tv/stereo equipment. Mounted a flat panel TV on the staircase wall, and sunk a stereo cabinet (ok - actually an Ikea kitchen cabinet) into a hole cut into the drywall. Added some trim and paint, and it works great. In a small room, it means my whole stereo/tv setup (and all the cables) is in the previously unused deep recesses of the under-stair storage. Awesome.
