very nice, and I love the look - but I could make that with a nice thick old board and some cheap hardware and it wouldn't cost me nearly $245...

On the one hand it can be hard to reproduce the patina of wear and oxidation in old wood, but on the other hand I'm sure you can find something at a salvage store for well under the ~$245 per board foot charged here.
