Admired last week in Portland, OR: pewter lamps at Canoe. "Connecticut pewtersmith Thomas Danforth II pioneered the craft of pewtermaking in the US between 1755 and 1782. Today, the tradition is maintained by his descendants in their Vermont workshop. Reminiscent of ships' lamps, but sleeker and more elegant in form, the lamps glow even when unlit with the characteristic warm tones of pewter. Designed for functional use, the burners and chimneys are of the highest quality." The Pewter Oil Lamps are $180 each at Canoe.
