Kitchen: Favorite Rooms

From Julie

We look back at some of favorite kitchens of the last year.

Below: To be filed under “This would only work in LA.” Somehow the acid green cabinets and pale blue backsplash are not too much in this kitchen from architect Bruce Bolander.

Below: Recycled wood, old apple boxes, and a stainless steel cooker are the elements of this simple French rustic kitchen featured in one of our favorite magazines, Living Etc.

Below: A technique for countering tedium in the kitchen: varied work-surface materials. In Francesca’s Brooklyn Heights kitchen, designed by architect Steven Harris, she used Corian cabinetry, marble countertops, and stainless steel counters on either side of the Viking range.

Below: We love the combination of cool stainless steel and warm wood in this kitchen by New York architects Messana O'Rorke.

Below: A Parisian kitchen on locking wheels, by French architects Karine Chartier and Thomas Corbasson, spotted at Marie Claire Maison. The simple plywood and stainless steel units can be reconfigured as needed; brilliant idea, especially in a loft. Click here to see a video of Karine Chartier demonstrating the versatility of a kitchen on wheels and giving a tour of the entire loft.

Where do you find Corian cabinets like the ones in Francesca's kitchen?

Hi! I just wanted to say that the kitchen from the Lagerlings site (which is actually just a posh real estate agent) is not from an old barn, it's a loft apartment in central Stockholm. :-) If you'd like to see more of this apartment, click on over to this post I made when it was on the market: http://emmas.blogg.se/2007/september/the-most-amazing-apartment-i-have-ever-seen.html

And I want to add that I love all of the kitchens pictured, except maybe for the top one which is just way too bright for me...

You are doing a great job with this blog, keep up the good work!

Thanks, Emma, for correcting our mistake! And as for the Corian cabinet question from Katie, I'm afraid you'll have to contact your local Corian dealer or an architect; Francesca's cabinets were spec'ed by her architect and custom made.

I'm a designer/builder re-doing an 1830's farmhouse upstate New York using glass from old patio doors , recycled timbers and rotary cut birch plywood along with a variety of vintage woods . My focus to date is on bringing the southern light into the house...a blacksmith shop in its first life. It's nice to see how the light reflects off of the stainless steel and is warmed by the wood paneling in the Messana O'Rorke kitchen. Thanks. Joshuastrees.net
